'Friends take time, don't stress in life' are some of my favorite lyrics that I've ever written. It only felt natural to make a small demo of this idea for mixing project #3. This idea actually came to me last year on an app called Voisey that connects singers/rappers to producers. There was a simple track that I had sung a verse and melody around. However, I wanted something more, so I decided to produce my own track with a similar chord pattern but different instrumentals. This song, 'Friends Take Time,' is about my past struggles making friends. A lot of people don't know this, but I can be quite introverted. However, I was always reminded that friends take time and that it shouldn't be something I stress about because the right people will come to me or vice versa. (PS. I do have friends).

For this song, I already knew the chord pattern I wanted to use so I decided to work on the beat first. I wanted the vibe of this song to instrumentally be reminiscent of the 80-90s while also being very modern. The percussion consists of a power rim, kick, snare, and high hat. To carry the chords of this song I chose to use an electric guitar, piano, electric bass, and synth strings. You may be surprised to hear that the vocals are very minimal on this song. I only added two harmonies (none of them stacked) and one melody (also not stacked) to give it a very raw feel. Overall I wanted the feeling to be intriguing, fascinating, self-reflective, mysterious, and adventurous.
On the mixing side of things, it was a bit difficult for the vocals but easier for the instrumentals. Applying EQ and Hi Pass/Low Pass filters was really fun considering now I know more about them. The same goes with compression. The reason why vocally mixing was hard was because I didn't have a lot of vocals to punch through the mix. So I had to really pay attention to the faders so that I can bring clarity using subtractive mixing. Overall I am proud of what I have created and will definitely need to make this song longer. But that will take time too lol.
