It simply felt amazing to be back in the studio to push my creativity. The goal of this assignment was to create a mix using a DAW. I use FL studio and the type of mixing that I did for this project was subtractive mixing. This means turning down certain sounds to boost others rather than boosting the sound you want. This type of mixing is great because it gives a lot of headroom for gain/volume control. It also allows a certain clarity to sound production.

When creating this project I first started with the beat. I initially already had a 'heartbeat' in mind and I knew the basic percussion elements that I wanted to use. When I started this project I wanted it to sound similar to a 2000s R&B song. I also wanted to use strings to create a victorious exploration feeling for this project. As I continued I added some brass, piano, and plucked strings. The finished project is an R&B beat that resembles an exploratory utopia. Personally, I can see this beat in a motivational video or a video game of some sort.

When I mixed this project, as stated before, I used subtractive mixing to create clarity. The only difficulty I had was the instruments that I wanted to be more prominent in this mix. I went with the drums, brass section, and orchestra section since they are what created the 'grand' feeling in the first place. I didn't use any signal processing. I used a hi pass filter for the brass section because some of the higher notes sounded a bit shrill and I wanted to highlight the warmness of the brass section. Overall I am pleased on how this project turned out.
