Royalties and Me

Royalties are such a key part of the music industry for artists, composers, producers, and especially songwriters. Through royalties, people in the music industry are able to get paid via how and how and where their music is being used. This can include outdoor venues that use your song and need a license to a television commercial that uses your recordings for one of their songs. However, it is important to make sure that the types of royalties fit what you need. After all, it does make sense to receive as much possible monetary earnings from your hard work as possible.

Three royalty sources or revenues that I would like to comment on and possibly to get involved with are SoundExchange, PROs, and Interactive Streaming Revenues.
Regarding SoundExchange, I definitely need to register with them as soon as my music comes out. I feel that SoundExchange is great for the artist side of my career because I'm an independent artist. I also really like that SoundExchange collects performance royalties for non-interactive recordings. This can be through streaming services in which you did not choose the song. It's also really cool because SoundExchange also issues blanket licenses and works with other foreign agencies.
I really need to consider PROs now because PROs are Performance Rights Organizations. I find PROs very useful because they are known to represent songwriters and publishers. This is wonderful because as an independent artist, I happen to be both. At the moment in the U.S. the PROs prevalent are ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR. What is cool about PRO's is that the also secure royalties from outlets and venues that require a blanket license. Now it's just a matter of which PRO would suit my career best.
Interactive streaming revenues are wonderful and I think they would definitely come in handy in times of heavy promotion. Being that there are many steaming platforms available, it is very important for me to make sure that I am getting paid. However, I do believe that it is best to partner this with registering with SoundExchange just in case my followers may loose interest after some time. After-all, I don't necessarily have a lot fo clout. (Not saying that's what the most important since music is, but it definitely would help)
