Basic Gain Staging and EQ

This was a great assignment for getting used to setting up a basic PA system along with gain staging and basic EQ.

The mic I used for this assignment is a Sennheiser Evolution Wireless Digital microphone system with an MM435 capsule. The mixer is a Yamaha 01V 96i digital mixing console. Being a stereo setup, I used QSC K10.2 2KW 90° active loudspeakers for both left and right.

When it came to gain staging it was important for me to pay attention to the source of my signal. I was able to get a good signal from my reciever, so setting up my gain on the mixer wasn't too hard. Once I set up my master gain, I was able to adjust the gain on the speakers, which I didn't need to tweak too much.

Mixing my vocal was a bit tough because beforehand I've only mixed on DAWs. But once I learned the interface, I was able to maneuver myself. It's interesting to me how different consoles have a slightly different sound.

I added an HPF up to about 53.0 Hz because the Q was quite wide. Then I decreased the shelf on an LPF by about -1.8dB because I didn't want too much air on my vocal.
Overall I'm very excited to see what the next project will be. Live sound is really growing on me and I know that I'll definitely use these skills further down the line.
